Minorities more likely to report police abuse:
Justice Department report release Sunday 2-17-2001

Blacks and Hispanics were twice as likely as whites to report the use of force in encounters with police, a Justice Department report release Sunday 2-17-2001.

The report also showed that black drivers were more likely than whites to be stopped, searched, handcuffed or ticketed. About 2% of blacks and Hispanics who had face to face encounters with police in 1999 reported force or threatened force. That compares with less than 1% among whites, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported.

The report comes as Attorney General John Ashcroft has asked Congress to authorize officials of singling out people based on their race
